Thai vs Chinese Massage: What Is the Difference?

By May Thai Therapy · Woolmer Green, Knebworth · Updated 14 October 2026

Thai massage combines pressure along energy lines (sen) with assisted, yoga-like stretches, often fully clothed. Chinese massage (tui na) focuses on kneading, rolling and pressing techniques along acupressure points and meridians. Both can be firm. Thai massage includes much more stretching.

Do we offer Chinese massage?

No. May Thai Therapy specialises in Thai massage and related styles. If you are searching for "Chinese massage Stevenage" because you want firm, focused pressure, our deep tissue or Thai Deep Mix massages are a good alternative, and you can ask for Ashiatsu (walking on the back) with any massage. We are about 10 minutes from Stevenage town centre (directions).

Safety

Massage is not suitable for everyone. Tell your therapist about any injury, recent surgery, blood-clot history, heart condition, or skin condition before you start. If in doubt, check with your GP first. For an acute injury, see a GP or physiotherapist before booking.
