Do You Wear Clothes During a Thai Massage?

By May Thai Therapy · Woolmer Green, Knebworth · Updated 14 October 2026

Yes. Traditional Thai massage is done fully clothed, in loose, comfortable clothing, and no oil is used. At May Thai Therapy we can provide loose clothes for you to change into. Oil-based Thai massages, such as aromatherapy and hot oil, are different: you undress to your comfort level and stay covered with towels.

What to wear for Traditional Thai massage

  • Loose, stretchy clothes such as a T-shirt and joggers or leggings.
  • Avoid jeans, belts and jewellery.
  • Or simply use the loose clothes we provide.

What about oil massages?

For aromatherapy, hot oil, deep tissue and Swedish, you undress to your comfort level. You stay covered with towels throughout, except for the area being worked on. Read more in do you take off your bra for a massage? and first full body massage etiquette.

Why Thai massage is clothed

Thai massage uses pressure and assisted stretches rather than oil strokes, so clothing does not get in the way and keeps you comfortable as you move.
