For everyday back tightness from sitting, driving or training, a deep tissue or Traditional Thai massage is usually the best choice. Both are £70 for 60 minutes at May Thai Therapy. For sudden, severe or unexplained back pain, see a GP or physiotherapist first.
Which massage for which back problem?
| Problem | Suggested massage |
|---|---|
| Lower back stiffness from sitting or driving | Deep tissue |
| General stiffness, poor flexibility | Traditional Thai |
| Upper back, neck and shoulder tension | Head, Neck & Shoulder |
| Tight back after training | Sports massage |
| Want very strong, broad pressure | Any massage with Ashiatsu (what is it?) |
When NOT to book a massage (see a doctor)
- Back pain after a fall or accident.
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs.
- Problems with bladder or bowel control.
- Fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain that is worse at night.
- Known disc problems or recent spinal surgery (ask your clinician first).
These can be signs of something that needs medical assessment. Massage is not a medical treatment.

What to expect
- Tell your therapist where it hurts, what makes it worse and any history.

- Pressure is checked throughout.
- Drink water and move gently afterwards.
How often?
For ongoing tightness, every one to two weeks for a few sessions, then monthly. More on frequency.
