What is a Thai massage?

Thai massage is a traditional therapy from Thailand. It combines rhythmic pressure along the body’s energy lines with assisted stretches. Traditional Thai is done in loose clothing without oil. The therapist uses their palms, thumbs, elbows and knees, and gently moves you through stretches you could not easily do on your own. Oil-based Thai treatments such as aromatherapy Thai combine Thai pressure points with flowing oil strokes. See Thai massage in Hertfordshire for all our styles.

Before you arrive

  • Book ahead. Online booking shows live availability. Walk-ins are welcome, but call first on 07360 276999.
  • Eat lightly. Avoid a big meal just before your massage.
  • Arrive a few minutes early. Use our car park behind the shop.
  • Tell us about your health. Mention injuries, recent surgery, blood-clot history, heart or skin conditions. We do not offer pregnancy massage.

What to wear

You don’t need to bring anything special. For traditional Thai massage, we provide loose, comfortable clothing to change into. For oil massages, you undress to your comfort level, most people keep their underwear on, and you stay covered with a towel throughout. Only the area being worked on is uncovered. Our massage attire guide covers this in more detail.

During the massage

Your therapist will ask about your preferred pressure and any problem areas. Thai massage can be firm, but it should never be painful. Say so at any time if you want it lighter or deeper. If you like very strong pressure, you can ask for Ashiatsu (walking on the back) in any massage. Some people chat, while most simply relax. Either is fine.

Etiquette

There is no special etiquette to learn. Turn your phone to silent, let your therapist know if you are too warm or too cold, and relax. May Thai Therapy is a professional, therapeutic massage salon. We do not offer any other kind of service, and any such request will end the appointment.

Afterwards

Take a moment before you get up, drink some water, and avoid a heavy workout for the rest of the day. You may feel a little tender after deep work, and that usually passes within a day or two. Wondering when to come back? See how often to have a massage.

Which treatment should I choose?

For a first visit, traditional Thai gives you the classic experience. Aromatherapy Thai is more relaxing, and Thai Deep Mix suits you if you carry a lot of tension. Coming as a pair? Try couples massage.
