Back Massage for Back Pain: Which Massage Helps?

By May Thai Therapy · Woolmer Green, Knebworth · Updated 14 October 2026

For everyday back tightness from sitting, driving or training, a deep tissue or Traditional Thai massage is usually the best choice. Both are £70 for 60 minutes at May Thai Therapy. For sudden, severe or unexplained back pain, see a GP or physiotherapist first.

When NOT to book a massage (see a doctor)

  • Back pain after a fall or accident.
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs.
  • Problems with bladder or bowel control.
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain that is worse at night.
  • Known disc problems or recent spinal surgery (ask your clinician first).

These can be signs of something that needs medical assessment. Massage is not a medical treatment.

What clients with back tension say

What to expect

  1. Tell your therapist where it hurts, what makes it worse and any history.
  2. Firm work on the back, hips and glutes, which often contribute to back tightness.
  3. Pressure is checked throughout.
  4. Drink water and move gently afterwards.

How often?

For ongoing tightness, every one to two weeks for a few sessions, then monthly. More on frequency.
